Personal Facts:

Cheryl pictured beside her favorite #1 New York Times bestselling author (his image was cropped from the photograph to prevent John from being sued for copyright/trademark infringement, but we'd rather see Cheryl anyway)John was born in South Boston, Virginia but  spent most of his youth in Forest City, North Carolina and has lived in or near Raleigh for the last 40+ years.  He has worked at law offices based in New Bern, Rocky Mount and Wilson, North Carolina and has been practicing in Raleigh for the last 30+ years.  John has two sons — Kevill, a 2014 graduate of Elon University School of Law married to the former Becky Plyler of Thomasville, and Ian, a project manager for a pharmaceutical company  — and currently lives in Wake County with his wife of 36 years, Cheryl.

Education:

John is a 1978 graduate of East Rutherford High School (final class rank:  top 10%) located in western North Carolina near the town of Bostic.

 

 

He is a 1983 graduate of North Carolina State University, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology (final class rank:  top 20%).  As an undergraduate, he was on the Dean's Lists.  He was also a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society during his freshman year while at Isothermal Community College.

 

He is a 1987 graduate of Campbell University's Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law, receiving a Juris Doctor degree cum laude (final class rank:  top 10%).  While there, he made the Dean's Lists and received academic scholarships.  He was a member of Phi Alpha Delta legal fraternity, Phi Kappa Phi honor society and the law school's Law Review.  He also authored a published note, "Entrustment under U.C.C. § 2-403 and its Implications for Article 9" (9 Campbell Law Review 407)

John received a second law degree (Master of Laws in Taxation) with distinction in 1990 from the Georgetown University Law Center (final class rank:  top 20%).

 

 Other Professional Information:

John has been licensed by the North Carolina State Bar since 1987.  He's no politician but nevertheless served for many years as the treasurer of the Judge Monica Bousman Committee until Judge Bousman's retirement.  He has been an instructor for the American Institute of Paralegal Studies, an adjunct business law professor at Meredith College and a guest lecturer at North Carolina Central University School of Law.  He has also been a speaker for seminars sponsored by North Carolina State University's Ready, Set, Retire! series.  He has been a member of the North Carolina Bar Association and the Wake County Bar Association and is a member of American MENSA.
